CSCSS Press Release
Auckland, New Zealand, LONDON, UK, Sept 24 2014 - The Centre for Strategic Cyberspace + Security Science (CSCSS), an international cybersecurity think tank, is pleased to announce Phoebe Fletcher as Director, Social Media Studies and Political Science Programme at CSCSS.
The Programme is established in recognition of the profound impact that the confluence between political movements and social media is having on shaping contemporary political ecology. The programme focuses on the critical thinking, research, design, and communications skills and experience needed to examine the impact of media on political science and culture today. The programme also analyzes the how social media is leveraged into current affairs, public policy, and mass media. In particular, the programme investigates the impact in social media on cyber culture, its use in social revolution, such as the ‘Arab Spring’, and as a weapon of cyber conflict, soft power, polarization, and political extremism.
The Social Media Studies and Political Science Programme provides a forum to discuss and analyze issues of mutual concern, and examines the roles, responsibilities and impact of media in policy processes.
Media is continually driving digital innovation. Using social networks, politically motivated groups can often organize themselves rapidly through seamless access to information, which opens up possibilities for rapid political transformation. The programme also studies the dangers of increased surveillance and the deliberate manipulation of new media.
Phoebe brings to CSCSS a background spanning academia, public relations, lobbying, and political commentary. She has taught at the University of Auckland and Massey University on Media Studies for the last twelve years, and is known in New Zealand as a pundit on domestic and foreign affairs.
“We are very excited to have to have Phoebe join our CSCSS team as director of our Social Media Studies and Political Science Programme at CSCSS. This is a cutting edge programme that will drive the way forward to explore this ever evolving area,” said President Richard Zaluski.
